BT Sport will continue to broadcast the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League finals free of charge in the U.K. via YouTube, as a demonstration of its technological capabilities and service.
The finals were streamed on YouTube for the first time in 2016. This was the first season BT Sport had the rights to the competitions. In 2017 and 2018, BT Sport offered a 360-degree Virtual Reality feed (VR) for the Champions League finals in 2017. Finals can also be viewed in 4K by BT TV.
Broadcast rights vary from country to country, but the combination between a major broadcaster and the largest streaming platform in the world is noteworthy for both technological and commercial reasons.
Live broadcasts of past competitions have attracted millions of viewers. They have also demonstrated that streaming can be an alternative to traditional television channels, allowing them to increase their reach.
Final UEFA Champions League final
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the final stages of the competitions in Portugal and Germany were compressed into mini-tournaments at the end last season. There was very little room for technical innovation.
The finals will return to their regular format this year. After the all-English Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester City takes place in Porto (Portugal) on Saturday, May 29 th. On Wednesday, May 26, th , Villareal, Spain, will take on Manchester United in Gdansk (Poland), on Wednesday, May 26 th .
The YouTube stream will now be available in 4K Ultra High Definition and 60fps. Viewers on the BT App can also enjoy other features normally reserved for subscribers. This includes “Watch Together”, which allows multiple viewers to view the same sporting event simultaneously. Virgin Media TV will offer the final free of charge.
BT hopes that viewers will be exposed to its services in a wider way than ever before, and sign up for a subscription if they don’t already have one.
Simon Green, head at BT Sport, stated that “after a difficult year, it’s exciting now to be approaching the conclusion of the soccer season, with three English teams reaching the European finals plus the possibility of watching it with friends and family in person.” You can view the final on BT Sport, online, YouTube or free on the BT Sport app. There are also Match Day Experience features like the enhanced player or Watch Together.

The finals could set new YouTube records due to the participation of three of England’s most powerful teams and the desire of friends and family members to meet one another after the lifting of indoor lockdown restrictions in the U.K. earlier in the month.
