Edifier Stax Spirit S3 Wireless headphones are the best on the market

One time in the 1970s, a teenager would buy hi-fi magazines, and then lust after legendary Stax Lambda headphones and Linn Sondek turntables. Although he couldn’t afford them, they were a big dream come true for him as they were the best.

Forty years later, the Linn Sondek LP12 still holds the crown for turntable design excellence. However, the Japanese Stax brand is no longer in existence. Edifier acquired the name in 2012. Edifier acquired the name in 2012. They are much cheaper than the original Stax Lambda headphones, which required a special power supply and were a little expensive back then.

The Edifier Stax Spirit’s first wireless headphones, the S3, feature planar magnetic drivers. Regular headphones have dynamic drivers that consist of a voice coil vibrating a cone of paper to produce sound. Planar magnetic drivers are designed for audiophiles and work in a different way. Planar magnetic headphones, which are not cone-shaped, vibrate vertically oriented diaphragms and sheets of plastic using electromagnets.

The EqualMass diaphragms in the S3 headphones can move large quantities of air with very small movements. This produces a more precise sound and lower distortion than regular dynamic drivers. This produces a more dynamic sound with a quicker response time and a shorter decay curve. This makes music sound more alive and accurate. Planar magnetic drivers are excellent at reproducing bass tones accurately and with clarity. The S3’s overall sound is exceptional.

The Edifier Stax Spirit S3 wireless headphones are among the most impressive I have ever heard. Although I have tried planar magnetic headphones from Oppo and Audeze, none of them were wireless. The Edifier Stax Spirit S3 headphones have aptX Adaptive, SBC and aptX Adaptive audio codecs. They also feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound chipset that controls the sound.

They are lightweight headphones that weigh only 329g. These headphones can be folded down into a compact size and stored in the zippered hard case. The headphones are lightweight thanks to the soft earpads and generously cushioned headband. They’re comfortable enough to be worn for extended listening sessions. For travel or on-the-go use, the S3 headphones come with an extra pair of cooling-mesh earpads.

Planar magnetic drivers use less energy to move their diaphragms, so the S3 can run for as long as 80 hours on one charge of the included rechargeable battery. This is the longest battery life I have ever seen in wireless headphones. It takes approximately two hours to fully charge the battery. The S3 also has a 3.5mm audio jack that can be used to plug in an audio lead if the battery runs out or the user wishes to use the headphones with a standard audio system.

The Edifier Stax Spirit S3 has a single microphone built in for making and receiving phone calls. It can also be used to use voice assistants such as Siri or Google Assistant. Multipoint compatibility allows the headphones to be connected to multiple devices simultaneously. A small group of multifunction buttons controls the basic functions of the headphones. These buttons can be used to adjust volume, pause music, or skip to next track. Although it’s not as original as the original Stax Lambda, Edifier chose a clean and simple design.

The Edifier Stax Spirit S3 wireless headphones are excellent in terms of sound. Planar magnetic drivers are a great choice because they bring music to life and have almost no distortion. Low distortion headphones are easy to spot because I can listen for long periods of time without feeling ill. The brain has to work harder to decode music that is distorted. Listening to low-distortion music is like breathing in clean, fresh air. This makes music listening so much more enjoyable.

I streamed Rhiannon Giddens’ excellent track “Just The Two Of Us” on Tidal to put the Edifier Stax Spirit S3 through its paces. This is a remix of Bill Withers’ classic song, with the dynamic sound of a New Orleans marching orchestra brass section. The recording is excellent and the S3 perfectly articulated the sound. All the instruments were separated to create a soundstage that felt as real as being in the same room as Ms. Giddens.

Keep in mind that the track was played using the AAC codec supported by my iPhone. The sound quality was amazing. It would have been even more amazing if I could have tried the aptXHD codec. The headphones were able to be tested at their maximum potential when I connected them to my large audio system using the provided audio cable. The sound quality was amazing, once again. The wireless audio quality was amazing. Edifier created a fantastic Bluetooth receiver for the Stax Spirit S3 using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Sound.

Verdict These Edifier Stax Spirit S3 wireless headphones sound amazing and are a joy to listen to. They are like breathing in fresh air. It is amazing to hear the vibrancy and dynamism that Audeze’s planar magnetic technology adds to music. The battery lasts for 80 hours on a single charge and the replacement ear pads provide excellent comfort. Although the Edifier Stax Spirit S3 headphones aren’t as luxurious as the original Stax Lambda Electrostatic headphones, they share the same spirit. The Edifier Stax Spirit S3 wireless headphones are great if you value sound and want the best sound possible.
