Garmin announced the Forerunner 955 as its “first dedicated running smartwatch with sun charging,”
The Fenix 7, Epix2 are both excellent runner’s watches. However, it might be better to consider the Garmin Forerunner 955, which is more affordable than either.
The Forerunner 955 standard costs $499 and the Forerunner 95 Solar $599. This represents a substantial drop in cost compared to the Fenix 7 models. The primary difference, as with the previous generation, is the change from a metallic bezel to one made of “fibre reinforced polymer”.
The Forerunner 955 will be a great choice for those who are looking for high-end Garmin features at an affordable price.
The Forerunner 955, like other flagship Garmin watches, now features a touchscreen along with its side buttons. Garmin turns off touch during tracked exercise by default to prevent accidental pressings. However, it offers a more modern interface for day-to-day use.
HRV Status is a new feature in the Forerunner 955 that’s not yet available in Epix 2 or Fenix 7.
HRV, or heart rate variability is a measure of the variation in heart beats over time. A score of 20ms or less is more positive than a high HRV (often 100ms).
Garmins such as the Fenix 7 now show HRV data in the 2-minute health Snapshot mode. However, the Forerunner 955’s HRV status monitors your heart rate variability while you sleep. This passive method allows you to track data at a consistent time every day and see any changes in your HRV score over time.
Garmin Forerunner 955 offers a Training Readiness Score that is not available in the previous-generation Forerunner 945. This score indicates whether your body is ready for big workouts. This includes factors like sleep quality, duration, and HRV status.
Similar to the previous example, Real-Time Stamina Insights analyzes exercise to help you track your pace better. This should be useful for marathon runners.
The Forerunner 955 has some of the same tech upgrades as other Garmin watches like multi-band GPS. This watch will be the most affordable option to have full GPS support and on-watch mapping.
The battery life of the Forerunner 955 may be shorter than that of the Fenix 7, at 15 days when it is in “smartwatch”, but this is a great deal for a collection of watches that can often seem expensive.
