Huawei has recently unveiled the Watch GT 3. This is the sportier version of the Huawei Watch 3 that was released in 2021.
Huawei Watch GT 3 is the first time that the “GT” series switches to Huawei’s HarmonyOS. It is now more like a smartwatch and has access to the Huawei AppGallery store and an Apple Watch-like scrolling page.
This watch is both a sports and smartwatch. How does it compare with the Samsung Galaxy Watch4?
It is slightly cheaper than the original. We don’t yet have pricing information for the Huawei Watch GT 3 in the US, so we will use UK prices to compare.
A 46mm Huawei Watch GT 3 costs PS229. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is 60% cheaper at PS369. The Huawei is slightly less expensive than the non-Classic models, at around PS40 ($55).
Classic Galaxy Watch 4 watches are more expensive than other models. The watches have a rotating dial that wraps around the screen. Although it’s a great way to control your watch, it does add to its cost. Instead of a rotating dial on its side, the Huawei Watch GT 3 features a rotating dial. It’s a bit like an Apple Watch crown.
Huawei has an advantage in the early stages, but this is not surprising considering that the GT series has always offered great value for sports watch buyers. Huawei’s plastic back helps keep costs low.
The Huawei Watch GT 3 is also a leader in battery life. It can last for up to 14 days with the 46mm model, and up to one week with the 42mm version. This is a significant improvement over the 2-3 day lifespan of the other Galaxy Watch 4 models.
It is unclear how Huawei managed to do this. Non-GT Huawei Watch 3 comes with two modes. The battery-saver mode allows the watch to last for up to 2 weeks, but it does not allow access to apps or the screen. It can also be used in full smartwatch mode, which lasts for 2-3 days.
Huawei either solved the HarmonyOS problem or cut some pieces to provide a full interface and long battery life. It will also use the same dual-mode approach to the Huawei Watch 3. The Huawei Watch GT 3 will last longer than the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, if needed.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is the winner in app support. The new Wear OS version is compatible with older Wear OS watches. However, it does not have access to the same apps as older Wear OS watches. Although the Huawei Watch GT 3’s Harmony OS does have its own app store at the moment, the selection is limited. Although there are a few guided workout apps available, they are very basic.
In terms of number of apps that you can run, these watches aren’t as useful as the Apple Watch Series 7. In this regard, the Galaxy Watch 4 is better than the Apple Watch Series 7.
Samsung offers additional health sensors. The watch also features an ECG sensor and an optical heart rate monitor. Huawei Watch GT3 only has the former.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 can measure blood pressure in some countries. The Huawei can’t.
Both can also take SpO2 blood oxygenation readings, and both have GPS. Huawei claims that it has improved the accuracy and reliability of its heart rate scanner to be more accurate than a heart-rate strap.
Although both watches offer a wide range of exercise options, neither watch has the same depth as a Garmin Forerunner and Fenix watch. These watches excel at casual to enthusiast levels, providing structured on-watch training plans for runners. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 offers some interesting insights into your running form.
If you need to use third-party services such as Strava to track your progress, the Samsung is better. WearOS 3.0 has a Strava app. If you are willing to do a little work, this shouldn’t be a reason not to consider the Huawei Watch GT 3G. Health Sync, a third-party app, can transfer data between platforms in most cases.
Both watches seem to be fairly well matched for exercising, but if you need to wirelessly connect accessories with ANT+ sensors, a Garmin is better. Both watches can do this.
First impressions: Which product should you purchase?
The Huawei Watch GT 3 is a more low-maintenance running watch than the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4. The battery lasts a lot longer so you don’t have to check it as often before going for a run.
It may not have a lot of advanced sensors, but they don’t really affect daily exercise tracking.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 has an edge on the smartwatch side. The app library is superior and will likely have a brighter future, especially for west-side residents.
