Leica and Panasonic announce a new partnership for digital cameras, lenses, and software

Today’s digital camera market has seen a significant development with Leica & Panasonic announcing their agreement to collaborate even more in developing digital cameras, lenses, and software.

Both companies have committed to combining their core competencies more often and to develop new technologies using the name L 2 Technology’. This symbolically brings together the two letters of Leica, Panasonic’s LUMIX brands for future marketing efforts.

L 2 Technology will combine the strengths of both LUMIX and Leica brands. It will use the combined technologies and know-how from the two companies to develop new camera and lens products as well as next generation software. This partnership will also help to develop technologies and solutions in the future.

Both companies believe they can maximize the synergies between Leica’s optical- and imaging technology and Panasonic’s video- and digital technology. This collaboration will allow them to share many years of experience in the market for camera and imaging. They will explore new creative and expressive ventures together.

The two companies will collaborate to invest in new technologies that could be integrated into their camera and lens products. This collaboration will also include the use of jointly developed technologies in their respective LUMIX and Leica products. Leica and LUMIX plan to use L 2 Technology in the future to offer new opportunities for creative camera users. It will also feature in their marketing activities to create a long-term collaborative system.

Cameras must be able to produce more stunning and impressive expressions, especially in an age where photos and videos can be shared worldwide in real-time. The Leica’s long history of developing high quality pictures and a picture-making philosophy has always impressed me. “I am extremely pleased and excited to continue working alongside Leica to create technology that will allow people around the globe to share their emotions,” stated Akira Toyoshima (CEO of Panasonic Entertainment & Communication Co.

“We have worked with Panasonic for many decades in a spirit based on trust and partnership. Their vast expertise is undisputed.” Matthias Harsch, CEO of Leica Camera AG, said that the combination of our expertise in L2 Technology is another milestone of the partnership. It proves that segmenting and specializing is not the best way to address today’s camera market challenges, but rather to build capabilities and jointly create solutions for tomorrow.”

Since August 2000, Leica and Panasonic have worked together. The companies initially signed a cooperation agreement regarding lenses of digital and audiovisual equipment. However, in 2001, it was decided to collaborate in the digital camera sector. The companies have increased their technological cooperation. They founded the L-Mount Alliance in 2018 with Sigma. This unprecedented cooperation allowed Panasonic, Sigma, and Ernst Leitz Wetzlar GmbH, to use the L-mount standard, which was developed by Leica, for their own development and offer optics and cameras with this mount.

This is a major step towards closer collaboration and should yield dividends for both businesses. It will be fascinating to see L 2 appear on new products, and to see convergence in the products each offers.
