Artificial intelligence will continue to evolve in 2022 as it strives to be the most transformative technology mankind has ever created. Sundar Pichai CEO of Google, said that artificial intelligence will have a greater impact than electricity or fire on human development. Although this may sound like an ambitious claim, it is evident that the technology is being used to combat climate change, study space and find treatments for cancer.

It is difficult to imagine the full impact of machines being able to make decisions. This will allow for decision-making to occur much faster and more accurately than it could by humans. One thing is certain: in 2022, breakthroughs and new developments are going to continue pushing the limits of what’s possible. Here are my top picks for the areas and fields that will see breakthroughs in 2022.


The augmented workforce

There has been a fear that robots or machines will replace workers, and possibly even eliminate certain jobs. As companies work to create data-literate cultures and AI-literate teams, we will be more likely to work with and alongside machines that can use cognitive and smart functionality to enhance our abilities and skills. Some functions, like marketing, are already familiar with tools that allow us to determine which leads we should pursue and what we can expect from potential clients. AI tools are useful in engineering roles. They can help us predict when machines will need to be serviced or repaired. We will be increasingly using tools to sort through the increasing amount of information available in knowledge industries like law. Smart tools and services that help us perform our jobs more efficiently are becoming more common in almost every profession. In 2022, more people will discover that they are part of their daily work lives.


Better and bigger language modeling

Language modeling allows machines to communicate in the language that we understand. It can also take natural languages from humans and convert them into code that can be used by programs and applications. GPT-3 was released by OpenAI. It is the largest and most complex language model that has ever been created. It contains approximately 175 billion variables and datapoints that can be used to process language. OpenAI is working on GPT-4, a successor that will be even stronger. Some estimate it could contain as many as 100 trillion parameters. This would make it 500x more powerful than GPT-3 and allow for speech and conversation that is indistinguishable from human language. It will also be much more adept at writing computer code.


AI in cybersecurity

The World Economic Forum identified Cybercrime this year as potentially posing more serious risks to society than terrorist acts. Hacking and cybercrime are becoming more common as machines become more important in our lives. Every connected device that you add to a network could be used by an attacker to attack you. It becomes harder to identify the points of failure in complex networks. However, this is where AI can play a role. Smart algorithms play a growing role in keeping us safe against 21 -century crimes by analysing network traffic and learning to recognize patterns that indicate nefarious intent. This is where we expect to see the most important applications of AI in 2022.


AI, and the Metaverse

The metaverse refers to a persistent, unified digital environment where users can collaborate and work together. It is a virtual world similar to the internet but with an emphasis on creating immersive experiences. Since Mark Zuckerberg talked about creating it using virtual reality technology and the social foundations of Facebook, this concept has been a hot topic.

AI will be undoubtedly a keystone of the metaverse. AI will allow for the creation of online communities where people can feel at ease and have their creative impulses nurtured. It is likely that we will become accustomed to sharing our metaverse environment with AI beings who will assist us with tasks or be our partner in chess or tennis when we need to unwind and relax.


Low-code and no-code AI

The lack of skilled AI engineers capable of creating the required tools and algorithms is a major barrier to AI-driven efficiency adoption in many businesses. Low-code solutions are designed to address this problem by providing simple interfaces that can be used to build more complex AI systems. No-code AI systems, much like web design tools that allow users to create interactive web pages by dragging and dropping graphical elements together in a web page, will enable us to create smart programs by plugging in different modules and feeding them our domain-specific data. Language modeling and natural language processing (see above), allow us to create programs with our voice or by using written instructions. This will all play a crucial role in the “democratization” and continued growth of AI/data technology.


Autonomous cars

AI is the brain that will control the autonomous cars, boats and aircraft that are poised to revolutionize travel and society in the next decade. 2022 should be remembered when we look back at the future and consider with horror that 1.3 million people were killed in traffic accidents each year. 90% of these deaths were human-caused.

Tesla claims its cars will have full self-driving capabilities by 2022. However, it is unlikely that they will be available for general use. Waymo, Apple, GM and Ford are its competitors. However, any of these companies can expect to make significant advances in the coming year. This year may also see the first autonomous ship cross the Atlantic. The Mayflower Autonomous Ship, powered by IBM, and built in partnership with non profit ProMare, will attempt the trip again after being forced to return this year.


Creative AI

AI can be used for creating art, music and poetry, as well as games. As new models like Google’s Brain and GPT-4 redefine what is possible, we can expect to see more complex and natural creative output from our ever-increasingly imaginative electronic friends in 2022. These creations will not be used as experiments or demonstrations of AI’s potential, as it is now. Instead, they will be used to create routine creative tasks such as headlines for newsletters and logos , infographics and designing logos . Creativity is often viewed as a human skill. The fact that artificial intelligence is now being used to create these capabilities in machines is a clear indication of how “artificial intelligence” is becoming more useful and functional than the somewhat fuzzy concept of “real intelligence”.
